How To Import .e00 Files

This help page explains how to import an Arc/Info export, or .e00, file into a format useable with ArcGIS. Arc/Info export files are primarily used on the Napa County website for raster data that is downloadable such as the slope data.

Once you have downloaded one of the raster layers, extract the .e00 file from the compressed .zip file using WinZip. WinZip can be found at http://www.winzip.com

Next, find the IMPORT71.EXE file located in your ArcGIS installation directory. It may be in C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Bin. Double-click on the file name to launch the program. This will convert the input file to an Arc/Info grid format which is readable with ArcGIS.

Under Export Filename:, browse to the location of your .e00 file.

Under Output Data Source:, browse to the location where you want to export the data to. Add the output file name at the end of the input box.

Click OK.

If you encounter an error when trying to use the exported data file, perform the following steps:

Delete the file you exported.

Repeat the steps above to create a new export file.

Repeat the steps above again, but use a dummy output file name. For example, call the output file "junk". It seems as though the IMPORT71 program does not close the output file when the conversion is complete. This causes an error when trying to use the output file. This situation is fixed by executing the program a second time.

When this completes, delete the "junk" file.
