Abstract:
Streams of the Napa River watershed. This layer was developed by the Napa County Resource Conservation District to quantify stream channel habitats and habitat quality in the Napa Valley and improve upon the accuracy and attribute detail of previously-available hydrographic datasets.

Supplemental information:
Developed using a combination of existing hydrologic and biological datasets for the Napa River watershed. The geographic extent of the layer encompasses all blue-line streams visible on USGS 7.5-minute topographic quadrangle maps within the watershed. All impoundments (i.e. ponds, reservoirs) were omitted. The layer was constructed using the following techniques in ArcGIS software:The existing 1:24,000-scale hydrography layer digitized by the USGS from topo quads was overlaid with the existing hydrography layer developed from LiDAR elevation data collected by Napa County as part of its 2005 Baseline Data Report (BDR).The “trace” tool in the ArcGIS editor menu was used to follow the exact paths of the existing channels in the BDR hydrography layer and create new stream lines. The new stream lines were drawn to the extent depicted on the USGS topo quads, but were positioned in a more spatially accurate alignment based on current aerial photography and LiDAR elevation data. The channel network was visually compared with the aerial imagery and LiDAR hill shade layers and manually adjusted where visible deviations were apparent. Each stream was broken into segments based on any one of the attributes listed below. In addition, tributary junctions were also used to delineate individual stream segments.Attributes were assigned to each stream segment based on existing data collected by the RCD and others. If insufficient data were available, “unknown” was used to reflect this data gap.As a final step, the channel network was generalized using the PAEK smoothing tool in ArcToolbox with a tolerance of 40-feet. This step was needed to remove the sharp zig-zagging pattern from the LiDAR-derived stream network, which improved the aesthetic quality of the layer and allowed for more accurate length calculations.
